NYC’s Asian Communities Support the New City Council District 43

Asian Wave Alliance, a nonpartisan group that educates Asian voters, applauds the Redistricting Commission on creating a majority Asian district in Brooklyn. The draft map lives up to the promise of the Voting Rights Act, Section 2, which protects minority voters, ensures communities of interest are kept together and avoids partisan gerrymandering. This will give the growing Asian community an equal opportunity to participate in the political process and elect candidates of our choosing.

According to the 2020 Census, the highest growth was in Brooklyn, up 9.2% in the past 10 years. This was unquestionably fueled by the Asian community which grew 43% or by 420,000.

For decades, Asian residents in Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Dyker Heights, and Bensonhurst have been splintered across four city council districts, diluting our representation and subverting our priorities and concerns. This draft map will unite and connect the Asian communities and allow their voice be heard at the City Council.
