June 12, 2023 (New York, NY) We are pleased to announce our endorsements for the NYC June Primary election. Our endorsements come after reviewing completed candidate questionnaires, publicly available news and records, participation in our candidates’ forums and member deliberation. We are thankful to all of the candidates who graciously provided us with their thoughtful responses on issues that are important to the Asian community in New York City.
The 2023 election for city council uses new district lines after redistricting last year. This will be another two-year term for those who are elected in November. Only registered voters who are registered as a Democrat or a Republican can vote in the primary election for their party starting on Saturday June 17th to 25th and on Primary Election Day June 27th.
Sam Ni, cofounder of Asian Wave Alliance and a community activist in Brooklyn, led the petitioning efforts for the new majority Asian D43 district said “We are excited that this newly created district will give Asians in south Brooklyn a better chance to elect someone who will advocate for us at city hall. This is already shaping up to be a competitive district with both a Democratic and Republican primary.”
In addition to the ranked choice endorsements for city council candidates, we are pleased to endorse George Grasso for Queens District Attorney. Lastly, we are excited to join many other organizations and leaders to endorse Final Five Voting, the election reform that will make open primaries possible; allowing all voters, regardless of party affiliation, to vote in NYC elections.
