Asian Community Leaders Launch Asian Wave Alliance, a New Nonpartisan Political Club to Assert Their Growing Political Power in New York
February 17, 2022 (New York, NY) Asian community leaders across the five-boroughs will engage with candidates and elected representatives to educate and mobilize their communities to vote. The 2020 Census and redistricting process made evident the dramatic growth of Asians in NYC, particularly in Queens (+29%) and Brooklyn (+43%). While Asian political participation rate is known to be lowest compared to other ethnic communities, it also means there is big upside to making a difference.
Within weeks after the November 2021 elections, Asian Wave Alliance (AWA) co-founders decided to form a new political club to meet the needs of Asian constituents. Unlike other clubs, Asian Wave is nonpartisan, and may endorse candidates across all parties based on their positions and achievement on issues that matter most to the Asian communities: safety, education, small business, language access and senior care.
Co-founder and political advisor, Phil Wong says “It’s about time Asians organize a politically conscious, engaged voting block that cannot be ignored by politicians. AWA seeks to ensure that Asian Americans are a part of policy conversations, media and civic life.”
“We will build a community to inform members on local issues, meet and endorse candidates, and vote for ones who will advocate for policies, programs and funding that will advance our prosperity in New York. Many of us are parents who fought the Mayor’s plan on the specialized high schools. We know the importance of electing the leaders who support our values.” says Yiatin Chu, President of Asian Wave Alliance.
